I was raised in a very healthy home, we ate mostly organic and I always knew that fueling yourself with the right food was important. However it wasn’t until after graduating college and being out on my own a little more that I realized that there was another part of this puzzle I was totally missing. It’s no only the things I put in my body that matter but also what I put ON my body. Your skin is your largest organ and absorbs whatever you’re putting on it right into your system.
I have always loved reading nutrition labels at the grocery store, but I finally started reading the labels at Sephora, CVS and Target where I was buying all by products. I started having this constant battle with myself, always conflicted about whether to splurge on the organic beauty products that would just about break the bank, or to ignore the harmful cancer-causing chemicals in my products to save money.
This sounds dramatic, but when the price difference is sometimes $50 – $100 between the products, it really is a huge decision. Not to mention that these products don’t last forever, so if I decide to spend the extra $$$ I am committing to spending that every other month or so.
I went through phases of ignoring the chemicals, then I’d panic and spend a whole bunch of $$ on clean beauty products and this cycle just kept repeating because I truly could not justify the price on some of the items.
I realized there must be a way to meet in the middle here instead of all or nothing. I started to research clean beauty products that would not drain my bank account. I decided that even if they were not the best of the best, as long as they were clean(ish) and in the middle price range, that that would have to do.
There are also some products that I feel don’t necessarily NEED to be completely organic. Like Mascara, it goes ON your lashes, not IN your eye (hopefully). Since it’s not being applied directly to my skin, I am ok with continuing to use my favorite inexpensive mascara that I’ve been using for YEARS. In case you’re wondering which one I love, it’s Lash Sensational by Maybeline. And it. is. the. best.
Below I’ve listed my finds for you, I found the cleanest products possible with the lowest price tag possible. Some are still WAY more than you’d end up spending on another brand, but in my opinion, these are the ones that are WORTH the $$$.
I also check all of the products that I buy with the EWG Healthy Living App. They rate products based on their ingredients.
Acure Brightening Day Cream: $16.99 – I have really loved all of the Acure products that I’ve tried. This brand is generally a safe bet if you’re looking for a clean product without a crazy price tag. This cream has a light citrus scent and I love using it in the morning to wake me up. And most importantly it’s Paraben free, Sulfate free, Mineral oil free, Petrolatum free, Silicone free, and Cruelty free. I also use it’s brightening night cream counterpart that has a soothing lavender scent.
Make p:rem: $32.00 – This Blue Ray Sun Gel has SPF 50 and PA++++ protection. I use this daily and have been for a few months now. I knew I needed to start incorporating an SPF in my morning skincare routine, but it was trial and error to find the one that works for me. This is lightweight, doesn’t make my face feel greasy and works great under makeup. I feel so much better knowing that I’m protecting my skin from the harmful rays of the sun on a daily basis and it’s free of Parabens, SLS and Synthetic Dyes. This one also works overtime and actually also helps fade dark spots on the skin, is anti inflammatory and anti aging. You can see all the details on glowrecipe.com
PHYSICIANS FORMULA – THE HEALTHY FOUNDATION – this foundation is great, it’s light coverage which I personally love for everyday use. It has SPF 20 in it to protect you from the sun (although I still always wear SPF 50 under it). This is another multi-tasking product which you know I love! It contains a brightening complex and hyaluronic acid to hydrate while wearing. It also had added amounts of vitamins A, C & E. There are some questionable ingredients in this one, but as far as makeup goes, it’s on the cleaner.
MyChelle Dermaceuticals Sun Shield: For a tinted sunscreen this is the
BODY WASH – Dr. Bronners castille soap. This body wash is 100% organic, comes in so many different
DEODORANT: Mega Babe Deodorant has been my go-to for months now. I bough two tubes of it and it’s lasted me such a long time. It has a light rose scent which I love and unless you really slather it on it won’t leave white marks on your clothes.
